Diminishers v. Illuminators

We've been hearing so much about diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in the news lately. It's been a topic of discussion around the country. 

Let's face it: This topic and the work of navigating our differences effectively, while at the same time honoring and maintaining the dignity, and sense of somebodiness of others is often uncomfortable and downright tough. As I go into organizations, I see an array of responses to the work of inclusion. Two I encounter often that I'd like to highlight are diminishers and illuminators. I hope that by translating these roles we play, we can help to foster environments where every individual feels valued, respected and empowered to contribute their genius.

Picture this: You're in a meeting, and the vibe is good. Ideas are flowing and the dialogue is open. All of a sudden, someone swoops in, derails the conversation and dims the light. Sound familiar? These folks are diminishers. Their lack of awareness and inattention to others immediately casts a shadow on the dignity and genius of others. Often, rooted in fear and a need to be right at the moment, they create divides and silos that make "others" out of teammates. The consequences of these “impact hijackings” are felt in many workplaces and are reflected in the sobering statistics of disengagement and turnover in countless organizations.

Thankfully, diminishers aren't the only role in the meeting! Illuminators radiate light. Flowing from the interactions of illuminators is a rare ability to not only recognize the inherent dignity and potential in every individual but also to amplify it. These beacons of somebodiness cultivate an atmosphere where differences are not obstacles but rather opportunities for growth and innovation. They ask questions that engage others, as opposed to “loaded” questions that manipulate. Their light is not blinding; it is inviting, drawing our differences together in a shared journey of discovery and achievement at the moment we need them to.
